Come and explore Hilde’s House in Castricum!
Come face to face with people from the past and discover the archaeological treasures of the province of Noord-Holland in Archaeological museum Hildes House, Archaeological Collections and Archive. Hilde’s House is home to a spectacular exhibition of the archaeology and human history of Noord-Holland. Discover how people used to live here, and how archaeologists can reconstruct a person’s life just from what they find in the ground.
Meet 14 unique figures from various periods in our spectacular exhibition. Archaeologists excavated their skulls from Noord-Holland’s soil and their faces were reconstructed using forensic techniques. Clothed in authentically reproduced items, the result is unbelievably life-like. History really comes to life!
A thousand archaeological treasures
Our display cases boast over a thousand archaeological finds from prehistory to the modern period. Alongside real showpieces such as canoes and sarcophaguses, you can also admire beautiful jewellery, amulets, weapons, tools, and eating and cooking equipment. Life in Noord-Holland across the centuries is brought to life using maquettes, films, and multimedia presentations. From the exhibition you can also view the Hilde’s House archive, in which another two million archaeological finds are kept.
A special welcome for kids
Hilde’s House offers an unforgettable experience for young visitors. The ArcheoLab gives children the opportunity to work on archaeological finds themselves. They can stand in an archaeologist’s shoes and sniff out history, and follow the children’s treasure hunt through the exhibition. Special children’s activities are often arranged in the school holidays. See the website for more information.
Gift shop and cafe
Visit the gift shop for a fun souvenir and pop into Hildes Heerlykhyd cafe for tea or coffee with something sweet, or a delicious lunch. Hildes Heerlykhyd is open to Hilde’s House visitors and the general public. Our sunny terrace is a lovely place to sit.
